Lemi Ghariokwu – Artist in residence

Northside welcomes Lemi Ghariokwu as Inaugural ‘Artist in Residence’

To honour the great and late FELA KUTI, The Public Opinion Afro Orchestra and Stani Goma (Flight 1067 To Africa PBS) combine forces to bring out a legendary Nigerian artist who was responsible for painting 26 of Fela Kuti’s now iconic releases. Next week (Sept. 11-15) Northside Records welcomes LEMI GHARIOKWU to becoming its inaugural artist in residence. Lemi will be at Northside Records for a whole week. His art space will be set up in the front window, basking in the beautiful sunlight. Come down to meet a great man and a great artist and see him creating something new.

It is truly and honour to be able to host an artist who has had a direct impact with his cover art on the power of the music and therefore its message. Fela Kuti’s music was a very important music for his generation and consequent ones as well. It helps people to understand the power of the resistance of solidarity against a force that is seemingly insurmountable. It has been Lemi’s artwork that has helped to explain the music to the masses. (Our ‘artist in residence’ poster created by Rex)

f you can’t make it to Northside, you can see and hear Lemi at various shows, exhibitions and talks during the next two weeks. His schedule looks like this:

7th September: Finding Fela screening at The Africa Hub
9th September: ‘Afro Art Beat’ exhibition at Nicholas Projects
9th September: Beasts of No Nation: A Tribute to Fela Kuti at The Night Cat featuring The Public Opinion Afro Orchestra
11-15th September: Artist in Residence at Northside Records
15th September: Panel Discussion at The Wheeler Centre for Books, Writing and Ideas
16th September: ‘Shepparton Afrobeat Celebration’ at St Paul’s African House

Stay tuned for details on all the artwork that is for sale as well as when is the best time to meet Lemi. The inaugural Artist in Residence at Northside has to be someone special, and SPECIAL we have got!  Below is one of Lemi’s great painting for Fela Kuti’s Alagbon Close. Plenty more to see instore.

Jordan Rakei – Instore

Jordan Rakei at Northside – Thurs. November 27

Northside is hyped to be hosting one of Australia’s most exciting new ‘musicians’ Jordan Rakei for a live instore performance on Thursday 27th November. Jordan is an amazing singer and multi-instrumentalist with a sound that transcends modern soul, sitting comfortably alongside the likes of Hiatus Kiayote, Fat Freddy’s Drop and Taylor McFerrin. Jordan’s current EP Groove Curse has been capturing the attention of  a worldwide audience – and has already been stamped a modern classic on the Northside super sellers list! Originally from New Zealand and now residing in Queensland, Jordan calls his sound lo-fi soul – we call it dope. Don’t miss your opportunity to catch Jordan Rakei in the flesh.

Entertainment will start around 6pm with DJs and refreshments, followed Jordan doing a ‘bare bones’ set shortly after.

Check out his sounds here. Check the Soul Has No Tempo label too. Check his facebook for other dates ++ I think I should pimp his Friday night show at Boney too,  where he’ll step it up to his full electronic show – appearing with other soul luminaries including Steve SpacekPut me on the guest list please JB/JR/SS!

DRMNGNOW Single Launch

Lots to celebrate!
Leaps & and Bounds Music Festival, NAIDOC Week and more.
AUSTRALIA DOES NOT EXIST bw. ALWAYS REMEMBER
Northside Records NR023S. Ltd. Edition

Neil Morris, or DRMNGNOW, is a Yorta-Yorta man and musician with a purpose. DRMNGNOW (pronounced Dreaming Now) is a project which is firmly focused on raising awareness around Indigenous justice in a post colonial society. This work is complex and is as equal parts system challenging as it is celebratory.

The single Australia Does Not Exist has been re-visited featuring Kee’ahn, a proud Kuku Yalanji, Jirrbal and Torres Strait Island woman, exciting emerging artist, and intergral part of the DRMNGNOW live experience . Her voice as an Indigenous woman speaks powerful volumes on this iteration of DRMNGNOWs debut track first released January last year.

Always Remember is a new song also ft Kee’ahn and Paul Gorrie adding a soulful touch to this piece on the hook. It is a song about Indigenous resillience in the face of colonial violence. It is a song that reflects on the link to thousands of years of spiritual power that the indigenous experience holds.

This seven inch release is as part of Naidoc Week and to give eternal life to important local songs.
