Archie Roach + Emma Donovan & The Putbacks – Instore!

Archie Roach + Emma Donovan & The Putbacks – Instore!

I told you to watch this space! See the poster for all the details. Read below for what Chris Gill has to say about this upcoming instore. Be there!

“This next announcement could be my proudest moment yet. For the 13 years I have operated this shop, one album that I say is perhaps the most important of all Australian records is ARCHIE ROACH’s “Charcoal Lane”. It was written on Gertrude Street, it was lived on Gertrude Street. For the first few years of the store I had a copy in the window. Now we get much more than that… THE 25 YEAR ANNIVERSARY of one of the countries most Important records ever made. It is ARCHIE ROACH “Charcoal Lane”.

I am proud to announce that at 2pm on SuNDAY the 15th NOVEMBER Northside Records will host the legend Archie Roach, live and INSTORE performing songs off his album Charcoal Lane that he wrote here 25 years ago. To commemorate the milestone CHARCOAL LANE has been reissued as a vinyl album the way it was originally released back then…. Come to Northside to secure a copy as they are VERY LIMITED.

Archie will be joined instore by another up and coming Australian legends EMMA DONOVAN & THE PUTBACKS. They will also PERFORM LIVE in the store. As you know Emma and the Putbacks have just released an amazing double sided 7″ which upholds the local indigenous heritage with a cover version of ARCHIE ROACH and on the other side WARUMPI BAND.” See the previous post for more info.

The Instore that started it – Cactus Channel

FUNK 45 LAUNCH AT NORTHSIDE

Cactus Channel
Saturday Jan. 29

Debut 7 inch release
Pepper Snake bw. The Dap (Hope Street)

Cactus Channel are a dynamic 10-piece high school band outta Melbourne. They’ve been gigging around town for a while now and have recently appeared alongside the likes of Charles Walker and the Dynamites. The band’s new single “Pepper Snake” is out on Hope Street Recordings, and much like stablemates The Putbacks, Cactus Channel are laying down no-nonsense heavy funk. There’s plenty of heat coming off the new Cactus Channel 7 inch; The record made it’s debut last week and is getting a great response from everyone.

Northside Records is excited to welcome Cactus Channel for an instore appearance and the official launch of the new single on Saturday January 29. The full 10-piece band will be instore along with DJ Manchild spinning some warm-up tunes and dropping science. It promises to be an exciting and very busy afternoon, so get in early to get your copy of the single and claim your spot on the dancefloor. The band will play at approximately 3pm, with Manchild getting busy on either side.

SAT. JAN 29 – 3PM. 236 Gertrude St. Fitzroy. Free!

There’s more about the band on their myspace: Cactus Channel

Expect a more detailed post about the new 45 (Cactus Channel: Pepper Snake bw. The Dap. Hope Street Recordings. 7-inch. 500 copies only) in the next couple of days. Copies are available now – and are strictly limited, so if you think you want one of these hot 45’s, do it now before it’s too late.

FROM THE PRESS RELEASE:
“The Cactus Channel hit you with a hard funk groove to rival the likes of James Brown or The Meters and you find you just can’t stop moving. But what’s that? They’re still high school?! With a musical maturity beyond their years you know that this 10 piece collective will go far. And that they’ll get a whole lotta rumps shaking along the way” DJ Manchild (PBS 106.7 ‘The Breakdown’)

Briggs & Trials / AB Original

BRIGGS and TRIALS INSTORE this FRIDAY

That’s right! Get on the good foot!

BRIGGS & TRIALS

Friday 9th October 5pm

Having just won Album of the Year at the National Indigenous Music Awards for his 2014 LP Sheplife and best video for Bad Apples, Victorian rapper Briggs is one of Australia’s finest and fiercest MCs. This became clear as early as 2009, when he self-released his debut EP, Homemade Bombs. Since then Briggs has released two albums on Golden Era – Sheplife and 2010’s The Blacklist – toured with the likes of Hilltop Hoods, Ice Cube, Yelawolf and Ghostface Killah, received several Deadly nominations and become a voice for indigenous rights

At The Workers Club he’ll be headlining with a typically incendiary solo set, as well as teaming up with Funkoars’ MC Trials for their A.B. Original project. (Trials will also be performing a DJ set). Support on the night will be up-and-coming rappers Philly, Birdz and Nooky who will be releasing music on Briggs’s new imprint Bad Apples Music.

Starting at 5PM come down to meet BRIGGS and TRIALS and dig on Trials DJ’ing then too.

Mulatu Astatke & Black Jesus Experience

Mulatu Astatke + Black Jesus Experience – Live Instore

Tuesday 7th June, 2016 – from 7pm

Yes, the LEGEND himself, MULATU ASTATKE will be performing at NORTHSIDE! Together with his band Black Jesus Experience, they have recorded a new album called CRADLE OF HUMANITY. They will be officially releasing and performing the entire album live at Northside Records. They will also have exclusive VINYL copies of the new album available for sale at the show (this will be first time the record will be available).

This is a unique honour for Northside Records. To have an artist of the calibre of the man who invented the sound ETHIO JAZZ is amazing. And in turn – for you the public to be able to see someone of the stature in such an intimate setting is equally unique. Both his MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL shows have sold out and this could be your last chance to see the master. Not to be missed.

Whilst the official album launch and vinyl release is June 7, we already have copies of the new album available on CD, and you can cop a listen right now on Bandcamp blackjesusexperience.bandcamp.com Damn – the new versions of NETSASET and YEKATIT on here are smokin! Blowin’ up from Mebourne to Addis Ababa.

Back to the Lab – Book signing

We are excited to have Raph Rashid joining us at Northside Records for a signing and celebration of his new hip hop home studio book, Back to the Lab. Raph’s new book is the follow up to 2005’s Behind the Beat, and much like the first volume is a intimate look into the home studios and creative sanctuaries and of some of today’s favourite hip hop producers. Featuring an array of household names like DJ Jazzy Jeff, Diamond D and Flying Lotus, the book also goes deep underground with lesser known producers like Georgia Anne Muldrow, Mitsu and Oddisee. And ultimate gear porn… keyboards, synths, MPCs, compressors and so much more!

The instore signing on October 28 will also feature a live Beats set from one of Melbourne’s most prolific and revered bedroom producersSilent Jay. We’ll have books for sale, fresh wax as usual and a couple of surprises. It’s a daily operation. Raph instore from 2-3pm, signing your new book and sharing tales about driving through backstreets and climbing over backyard fences in Atlanta to ‘get the shot’.
