BRIGGS and TRIALS INSTORE this FRIDAY

That’s right! Get on the good foot!

BRIGGS & TRIALS

Friday 9th October 5pm

Having just won Album of the Year at the National Indigenous Music Awards for his 2014 LP Sheplife and best video for Bad Apples, Victorian rapper Briggs is one of Australia’s finest and fiercest MCs. This became clear as early as 2009, when he self-released his debut EP, Homemade Bombs. Since then Briggs has released two albums on Golden Era – Sheplife and 2010’s The Blacklist – toured with the likes of Hilltop Hoods, Ice Cube, Yelawolf and Ghostface Killah, received several Deadly nominations and become a voice for indigenous rights

At The Workers Club he’ll be headlining with a typically incendiary solo set, as well as teaming up with Funkoars’ MC Trials for their A.B. Original project. (Trials will also be performing a DJ set). Support on the night will be up-and-coming rappers Philly, Birdz and Nooky who will be releasing music on Briggs’s new imprint Bad Apples Music.

Starting at 5PM come down to meet BRIGGS and TRIALS and dig on Trials DJ’ing then too.

Mulatu Astatke & Black Jesus Experience

Mulatu Astatke + Black Jesus Experience – Live Instore

Tuesday 7th June, 2016 – from 7pm

Yes, the LEGEND himself, MULATU ASTATKE will be performing at NORTHSIDE! Together with his band Black Jesus Experience, they have recorded a new album called CRADLE OF HUMANITY. They will be officially releasing and performing the entire album live at Northside Records. They will also have exclusive VINYL copies of the new album available for sale at the show (this will be first time the record will be available).

This is a unique honour for Northside Records. To have an artist of the calibre of the man who invented the sound ETHIO JAZZ is amazing. And in turn – for you the public to be able to see someone of the stature in such an intimate setting is equally unique. Both his MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL shows have sold out and this could be your last chance to see the master. Not to be missed.

Whilst the official album launch and vinyl release is June 7, we already have copies of the new album available on CD, and you can cop a listen right now on Bandcamp blackjesusexperience.bandcamp.com Damn – the new versions of NETSASET and YEKATIT on here are smokin! Blowin’ up from Mebourne to Addis Ababa.

Mildlife – Phase Album Launch

INSTORE PERFORMANCE: MILDLIFE

Friday 23rd February 2018

Mildlife take the musical canvas, rip the lids off the paint tins, and throw vibrant splashes of colour into kaleidoscopic jams. Old friends, the Australian four-piece bonded over the desire to push musical boundaries, developing tight live shows bolstered by wild improvisation and a debut record that mines jazz, psych and disco for its irresistible groove. A melting pot of musical sensations, Mildlife combine progressive 70s sounds with electronic krautrock, backed by a mixture of rhythmic funk, house, and dream-pop, to create an addictive atmosphere that is captured in their debut album PHASE. Come down to celebrate the launch of their first ever album. A stalwart on the Fitzroy band scene, these guys will make the foundations shake!

Back to the Lab – Book signing

We are excited to have Raph Rashid joining us at Northside Records for a signing and celebration of his new hip hop home studio book, Back to the Lab. Raph’s new book is the follow up to 2005’s Behind the Beat, and much like the first volume is a intimate look into the home studios and creative sanctuaries and of some of today’s favourite hip hop producers. Featuring an array of household names like DJ Jazzy Jeff, Diamond D and Flying Lotus, the book also goes deep underground with lesser known producers like Georgia Anne Muldrow, Mitsu and Oddisee. And ultimate gear porn… keyboards, synths, MPCs, compressors and so much more!

The instore signing on October 28 will also feature a live Beats set from one of Melbourne’s most prolific and revered bedroom producersSilent Jay. We’ll have books for sale, fresh wax as usual and a couple of surprises. It’s a daily operation. Raph instore from 2-3pm, signing your new book and sharing tales about driving through backstreets and climbing over backyard fences in Atlanta to ‘get the shot’.

Remi – RAW X INFINITY Launch

Remi ‘Unofficial’ Album Launch at Northside

That’s right, another LIVE INSTORE at Northside! In fact, we have several planned for upcoming months so stay tuned. This time Northside Records is proud to host the magic that is REMi. A young Northsider who is making big waves. REMi is about to drop his new album “Raw X Infinity” and will be showcasing the new tunes right here! This will be one of those times as you will be able to say you saw him back when..….

The instore kicks off around 2pm and will also feature a YOUNG EZY, a prize winner from AFRICA’S GOT TALENT. Young Ezy will be performing the song ‘Aspire’ that made heads turn at AGT. Northside DJs and friends will be keeping it HIP HOP all day long. Word.

Bernard Purdie – Instore Signing

Bernard “Pretty” Purdie – Instore Signing

On Monday December 3 Northside will play host to the one and only Bernard Purdie, the most recorded drummer in the world. A long time Northside favourite, and a funk originator – Purdie transcends music genres and is regarded as one of the finest and funkiest drummers to ever tickle the skins. He’s played with everyone from James Brown, Eddie Palmieri, The Last Poets and Aretha Franklin to Steely Dan, Hall & Oates and Robert Palmer. Undisputed heavyweight and real live living legend. Don’t miss your chance to meet the man who put the “shuffle” in the funk (and the Rock, and the Jazz, and the Soul and the Blues).

The Bamboos – RSD 2010

Record Store Day – April 17
The Bamboos explode at Northside Records!

It’s almost that time again – International Record Store Day. To celebrate, and entice you away from your laptop and illegal downloads for a day, Northside Records is proud to present THE BAMBOOS, appearing live instore at 3pm on Saturday April 17. We’re not sure where we are going to put them all, or how anyone else will be able to actually get into the store once the band is setup, but that’s a minor detail. The important thing is live music from one of Australia’s hottest soul/funk outfits. In past years we’ve been lucky enough to host Cookin’ on 3 Burners, but this is gonna be some next level shit! The Bamboos are set to tear up Gertrude St. with a frantic 30 minute set of smoking soul and funk tunes. It’s gonna be a riot!

Entry will be free, and aside from the band, Northside will be offering some other special deals to celebrate Record Store Day, like Chris’ famous 6 reissues for $100, give-aways and dance demonstrations from the funky man himself. If you want to see the Bamboos up close, we suggest you get in early because it’s gonna get damn steamy with so much funk in one place. 3pm sharp. Don’t sleep.

More information about Record Store Day can be found on the official website, along with a comprehensive list of all the record stores who will be participating around the world. Keep vinyl alive and dip into your deep pockets for one very special day of train-spotting and nerding-out. ‘Nuff said.
