Born out of a deep love for the dancefloor, Wrong Way Up channel vintage Afro disco and psychedelic boogie to bring a new kind of heat.

Paying homage to Frances Bebey, William Onyeabor and Lijadu Sisters, the Melbourne-based Afro-synth duo delivers energetic melodies, deep grooves and addictive chants – led by a less-is-more manifesto. Featuring quirky synthesizers and 1970s drum machines, the result is a sonic landscape that feels fresh and unique, yet somehow familiar.

Playing at this years Womadelaide, Wrong Way Up, will be hosting a wild party this Friday at 6pm sharp.

we welcome the Andrew Gurruwiwi Band is a high-energy, 8-piece funk band who have honed their chops on the beach at Birrtjimi and in the dirt of Yirrkala, a remote NT community in N.E. Arnhem Land. Led by Andrew Gurruwiwi, a shy-but-extravagant, blind, keytar-wielding Yolngu elder with a passion to make people dance while sharing his culture they write real funk jams in their native tongue, Yolngu Matha. They play YOLNGU FUNK. Be here at 6pm sharp, it’ll be one for the lovers and the lovers of dance here early on Valentines Day. Share the love as there of course will be a prize for the best dancer! To co-inside with relase day (and Finn’s brthday) we invite you all to come and see the majesty that is the amaing live show of CLOSE COUNTERS! It’ll be super super funky and of course the PRIZE FOR THE BEST DANCER will be a hard fought affair.

THe album LOVERS DANCE ACADEMY has been described as the years best soulful dance album even though its only February! (Thanks Frank Booker!!) It brings together some amazing local musicians to create a eally fun and enjoyable album.

CINTA drops her sophomore album WORTH CONTROL that has been described as “Australia’s soul album of the year” it’s an amazing second album, rather than it being a chronological artistic step forward, it feels as though we’ve turned inward, taking a deeper, more introspective journey into the heart of our expression. We’ve sharpened the vision we had for our first record, and ‘Worth Control’ truly shows how we’ve grown and come into our own. Like any good musicians we’re equally enamoured by the classics as we are contemporary, boundary-stretching music, so our goal is always to marry these ideas within our own composition. This union of old and new-school creates a solid platform for our wonderful songwriter, Cinta to demonstrate the magnitude of her vulnerable and authentic storytelling.

Local soul / r&b goodness to help start your year and ours. Come to the show, Grab a copy of the record then kick on to the @theevelynhotel later that night as CINTA brings in a whole bunch more friends on the bigger stage and jams the night away. After more than a decade of lighting up Australia’s soul scene and stages across the country, Fulton Street is all grown up with the release of their sophomore album ‘Hard Truths’ – and they aren’t holding back. Raw and real, ‘Hard Truths’ is forthright funk that shoots straight from the heart. Made with great reverence to the roots of funk and soul, ‘Hard Truths’ is made up of 11 songs recorded directly to tape. Produced and mixed by Fulton Street’s very own Jamie Stroud, the album was recorded with Alex Bennett from Sound Recordings in Castlemaine and is a tribute to the rawness of analogue recording, resulting in a sound that makes you feel like you are right there in the room. From their Uni days, Fulton Street has retained a truly vibrant sound that has only grown into a lion’s roar. Recorded and produced to perfection, ‘Hard Truths’ is a record for retro music lovers who are looking to hear something true.

Ella Thompson’s new record Ripple on the Wing is a soaring 10 song collection – a sweet and spooky modern take on classic soul music. Backed by an impeccable band featuring members of Surprise Chef with other Melbourne soul luminaries; Ripple on the Wing’s production palette is an intoxicating blend of the acoustic & amplified – with harpsichord, piano & flute melding with classic funky drums, organ, guitar along with those sweet vocal harmony singalong ‘oohs & ahhhs’ that make everything alright.

Trumpeter, pianist, vocalist, composer, arranger, producer, award winner, legend, Audrey Powne is beginning our incredible week with an incredible night! Starting at 6pm she will be able to share her incredible DEBUT LP “From The Fire”. Audrey is one of our most important musicians in town  and this incredible album puts her on a world stage.
