SIMON MAVIN
‘Good Hair Day / Only You & Me’
(Bastard Jazz) 12″ $28

Bastard Jazz is proud to present the debut EP from producer and multi-instrumentalist Simon Mavin. Most well known as the Grammy nominated keyboardist/co-producer and co- writer of the celebrated Australian band Hiatus Kaiyote, Simon’s had a hand in multiple projects across the spectrum, but has yet to release under his own moniker until now.

The EP, which features two original tracks and two remixes from fellow Aussies Harvey Sutherland and Close Counters starts out was recorded in-between projects at the Grove, a small recording sanctuary in Melbourne. In Simon’s studio, he had installed a library of keyboards. 30-40 synthesizers, all of which were painstakingly patched in to be simultaneously accessible and ready to record in an instant. A drum kit in the corner was constantly mic’d up, and everything routed through a multitude of analog mixing desks providing different flavours of tone and texture.

JOHN COLTRANE WITH ERIC DOLPHY
‘Evenings At The Village Gate’
(Impulse!) 2LP $78

In the summer of 1961, John Coltrane headlined at the celebrated music venue, the Village Gate, with a lineup of musicians that included McCoy Tyner, Reggie Workman, Elvin Jones, and the fiery playing of Eric Dolphy. Now after six decades, the live recording of the creative and transformative spirit that sprang from the pairing of Coltrane and Dolphy, and the evolving short-lived quintet, Evenings At The Village Gate: John Coltrane With Eric Dolphy.

Recently discovered at The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, the recordings of these fabled performances—recorded by engineer Rich Alderson as part of a test of the club’s new sound system—were seemingly lost, then found, and then disappeared again into the vast sound archives of the Library for the Performing Arts. The tapes’ circuitous route over several decades seemingly mirrors Coltrane’s ongoing musical journey in August of 1961.

Recorded during Coltrane’s month-long Village Gate residency with his quintet (often with a revolving cast of musicians), the album consists of eighty minutes of never-before-heard music. It offers a glimpse into a powerful musical partnership that ended much too soon – Dolphy sadly passed away three years later and this recording is the only live recording of their legendary Village Gate performances. In addition to some well-known Coltrane material (“My Favorite Things,” “Impressions,” and “Greensleeves”), there is a breathtaking feature for Dolphy’s bass clarinet on “When Lights Are Low,” and the only known non-studio recording of Coltrane’s composition “Africa,” that includes bassist Art Davis.

WITCH
‘Zango’
(Desert Daze Sound) LP $48

Zango is the first album in nearly 40 years from Zamrock icons WITCH, out now on Desert Daze Sounds. The record marks an astonishing return from the Zambian group, equalling the now storied legacy of their back catalog and reaffirming the relevance of the Zamrock movement they helped pioneer in the early 70s.

Zango retains the hallmarks of the Zamrock sound, effortlessly blending proto-metal and hard rock riffs with Afrobeat and funk rhythms, while also re-energising the sound for a modern era. The record brilliantly utilises current day Zambian stars Theresa Ng’ambi, Hanna Tembo and Sampa The Great to complement bandleader Emmanuel “Jagari” Chanda, who at age 71 sounds as invigorated as he did in the band’s infancy.

What remains steadfast in WITCH’s new era is the countercultural spirit of the music, no less urgent in this current political climate as when they were fighting authoritarianism and economic collapse in the 70s and 80s. On Zango’s closing track, “Message from WITCH”, Jagari distills the core ethos of the band into a final credo, stating that the band “unites beliefs/Conquers xenophobia/It laughs at hate speech/Ends sexism/It erases homophobia/Shatters antisemitism/Embraces every race.”

On Zango, WITCH proves yet again that music as a form of resistance remains the perfect antidote to the enduring injustice that has simmered away throughout the band’s absence, making their return all the more vital.

JAYDA G
‘Guy’
(Ninja Tune) LP $58

Jayda G, the Grammy-nominated writer, producer, DJ, environmental toxicologist, campaigner and broadcaster, is set to return with her new full length album ‘Guy’. Co-produced with Jack Peñate (who has previously worked with the likes of SAULT, David Byrne and Adele), with contributions from Lisa-Kaindé Diaz (of Ibeyi), Ed Thomas (Stormzy, Nia Archives, Jorja Smith) and more.

The new album ‘Guy’ brings Jayda’s own voice and words more prominently into focus than ever before, across 13 tracks that draw on her House, Disco, RnB and Soul roots while emphasizing her pop songwriting sensibilities, interspersed with archival recordings of her late father, the eponymous William Richard Guy.

AFRICAN HEAD CHARGE
‘A Trip To Bolgatanga’
(On-U Sound) LP $52

African Head Charge return to On-U Sound with their first new album in twelve years. Titled A Trip To Bolgatanga, the recordings are led by founder member Bonjo Iyabinghi Noah, with close friend and co-conspirator Adrian Sherwood once again at the controls. A Trip to Bolgatanga is a stunning return, bringing together the talents of two masters who, after a hiatus, have created a rich album brimming with ideas and executed with finesse.

A Trip To Bolgatanga is a musical journey to Bonjo’s current hometown in north Ghana. A psychedelic travelogue across the landscape featuring their trademark hand percussion and group chanting augmented with rumbling bass, mutated horns, dubbed out effects, wild wah-wah, haunted voodoo dancehall, synthetic swells, disco congas, tumbling layers of electronic effects, blues-inflected woodwind, and funky organ. As with every On-U Sound production, each repeated listen reveals fresh detail, and its power won’t be really understood until heard on a big system, when it’ll reduce all competition to rubble.

ALTHEA & DONNA
‘Uptown Top Ranking’
(Virgin) LP $58

The ultimate ‘one-hit-wonders’, Uptown Top Ranking was a surprise International No. 1 smash hit single for the teenage due Althea and Donna. Entranced by Trinity’s hit ‘Three Piece Suit’, they wrote a ‘reply’ song – Uptown Top Ranking, which they cut for Joe Gibbs.

The album features the cream of Jamaica’s reggae musicians – ‘The Riddim Twins’ (Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare) gives the music the fat rhythms, while the legendary group of players, The Revolutionaries – the sublime horn section of Tommy McCook, Vin Gordon, and Herman Marquis; guitarist Earl “Chinna” Smith and keyboard player Bernard Harvey, provide the icing on the cake.

Despite the teenage girls’ lack of experience, this is a fabulous collection of roots reggae that swings from intense moody appeals to Jah, to brightly upbeat pop songs, and the Revolutionaries’ outstanding contribution deserves the recognition it never received at the time. The title track has been covered many times, notably by Bristol trip-hoppers Portishead, in the late-’90s. This reissue includes two bonus tracks – It Mek, an album out-take unreleased at the time, and Going To Negril, a 12” single, also from 1978.
